Navigating Texas CCMR Challenges: Insights from Education Leaders

In a recent Conversations with Educators webinar, Guiding Students to Bright Futures: Exploring Easier CCMR Tracking, resident education experts Jennifer Knipp, Craig Dickey, and Lisa Tunnell delved into the critical topic of College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) tracking in Texas. The webinar highlighted the challenges faced by districts and provided insights into how the Pathways platform is addressing these issues.

What role do counselors play in preparing students for life after high school?

Jennifer Knipp: Not too long ago, we had the pleasure of hearing from the Director of Learner Pathways at Willis ISD, Dr. Ivan Velasco, and the focus of that conversation was around “Unlocking Student Success.” Dr. Velasco touched on 3 key points around how counselors are pivotal in guiding students so they can have a clearer idea about their path after high school whether it be college, career, or military.

  1. The first point Dr. Valasco made was that counselors are the heartbeat of the school. We know every single person in education plays an important role in student success and counselors are especially essential in supporting the emotional well-being of students - making them feel loved and respected from elementary through high school.
  2. Second, counselors put great emphasis on building relationships and emotional readiness with students. Emotional intelligence is as important as academic intelligence, and counselors help students to become more emotionally prepared for learning.
  3. Lastly Dr. Velasco talked about how counselors provide true comprehensive guidance and support for students. He shared that counselors have a wide range of responsibilities including addressing serious issues like suicide prevention, and drug addiction, all while they are guiding students to graduation and that diploma, and beyond. So, when it comes to CCMR, counselors play a critical part.

What are some common challenges districts face in tracking CCMR and graduation pathways?

Jennifer Knipp: Districts encounter time-consuming tasks related to verifying diverse data sources, ranging from ACT and SAT scores to industry-based certifications. The struggle lies in efficiently tracking and ensuring students meet graduation requirements and CCMR qualifications.

Craig Dickey: Every district grapples with similar issues, such as managing the complexity of tracking CCMR components, dealing with changes in program offerings, and addressing local requirements. The struggle is to find more effective ways to handle these tasks.

How does Pathways address these challenges in CCMR tracking?

Lisa Tunnell: Pathways offers a comprehensive dashboard that provides a quick overview of CCMR status for students, allowing schools and districts to assess whether students have met or are working towards CCMR requirements.

Craig Dickey: Pathways' 'Build Your Own Report' feature allows users to customize reports according to their specific needs. It also streamlines the upload process for crucial data, such as ACT, SAT, and EOC results, making it user-friendly for educators.

What is the significance of the Program of Study tool in Pathways and how does Pathways assist in tracking Programs of Study?

Lisa Tunnell: The Program of Study tool enables counselors to guide students effectively by providing a visual representation of their progress in various pathways. It simplifies decision-making for students looking to pivot in their academic journey. Pathways includes a detailed Program of Study report, providing a snapshot of students' progress in specific pathways. This feature helps counselors guide students effectively based on their earned credits and certifications.
